Lamp;H was surrounded by allegations due to their aggressive approaches on their audit work. As for Anderson, it took in 17 out of 58 Lamp;Hââ¬â¢s clients after Lamp;Hââ¬â¢s fall, which was close to double of all the clients being taken in by any other Big Six (Read, 6). This behavior was a strong indication that Lamp;H and Anderson shared the same philosophy which was to earn the most out of the hole of regulation and law. 2) No. According to the Analysis of Lamp;Hââ¬â¢s Clients by Subsequent Auditor, Anderson took in the most numbers off clients of Lamp;H, which is 17 out of 107 among 33 CPA firms. Based on the timeline and the above definition of subsequent events, I believe that it is a subsequent event. But whether Deloitte needed to evaluate the sales occurring after the balance sheet date of May 31, 1984 depends on the materiality of the over sales occurring during May 31, 1984 and October 24, 1984. It was said that over sales occurred shortly after May 31, 1984. Then how big was the over sales between May 31, 1984 and October 24, 1984? Was the number material enough to subject to disclosure? It was an issue required judgment. Between 1984 and 1987, $158 million was contributed as the (74,000+66,000=140,000) partnerships though the limit of the sale of memberships was only (25,000+30,000=55,000). The actual sales were almost triple of the limit. However, how was the over sales allocated. Was the over sales occurred between May 31, 1984 and October 24, 1984 significant enough to subject to disclosure? We have no clues from the information provided. As a CPA firm, it just exercises due professional care in the performance of the audit and the preparation of the audit report. 5) High risk, high return. Companies willing to accept high-risk clients are striving to provide the so-called value-added service to its clients. They choose to push the edge of law and regulation to earn high return. This is the nature of market economy. 6) Bonus-approval procedure in PTL Club was a joke. Documentations for large amount of expenditure were lost. Careful inspection of records and documents alone would be able to reveal PTLââ¬â¢s financial problems or at least put them in a position to confess to some of the fraud. Limitations include the inability of a project manager to mobilize all the resources of a company as he has direct control of only what falls under his area of specialty. Employees and managers of such projects have been found to become slack towards the termination of projects due to the fear of losing their jobs once their projects have been completed (Kloppenborg, 2009). Due to the limitations of both the operational and functional management structures the matrix was developed. This structu re combines both structures to form a hybrid structure. In this type of structure there are two types of managers, namely functional and operational who work together in the same system. The functional managers are responsible for the distribution of resources in their specialty departments and the operational managers coordinate and manage the activities of their departments. The functional managers are also responsible for overseeing all the technical decisions that fall under their departments. This method of management has its advantages such as: the project manager oversees all activities that fall under his department. He has all authority and power and thus this eliminates the wastage of time as a result of quarrels and conflicts among the top levels of an organization. Secondly the manager is able to use organization resources in facilitating the execution of the intended goals and objectives of the company. Disadvantages include the conflicts and coercion between project ma nagers and functional managers that is bound to occur in such a setting. This kind of relationship has an eventual effect on employee motivation as it often results in the demoralization of employees (Young, 2007). These include the type of activities to be carried out, their importance / order of priority, the human skill required, the amount of time needed and the resources that are required to accomplish the set targets. Situations that require extensive cooperation and interaction of the functions of an organization require matrix types of management. However there is no optimum type of organization and the organization must strive to come up with solutions to its unique needs and situations. For a project to be well managed a healthy culture of communication must be developed. Communication theories propose that the project manage r should always be like the hub of a bicycle. This means that the project manager acts as a focal point through which suggestions and results are received from various stakeholders. The project manager also acts as the supporting point for the communication wheel. It is therefore very important for project managers to assist in maintaining a good communicative culture within the organization (Burke, 1999). Factors such as nature of businesses in which the organization is in, size of projects and type of projects will also have a strong impact on the type of management structure that an organization may use. Formal management structure vs culture of parent organisation Formal management has an overall effect on the operations of an organization. The type of management that an organization has ultimately affects how its activities are carried out. Formal management is important in an organization as it serves as a foundation on which an organizationââ¬â¢s goals and principles are g uided. There are various guidelines that dictate the behavior and characters of managers in formal systems. Managers in formal managements are required to have high integrity / moral standards, should be an effective communicators and listeners of others. Managers serve as the basis through which a formal management system is enforced. The project manager should also relate well with people. He should have the ability to motivate and influence his workers positively. The project manager is also bestowed with the responsibility of ensuring that all aspects and stakeholders of a project work together for the common good of the organization. The manager is also responsible for setting time frames and ensuring that the project adheres to the set schedules. This serves the purpose of ensuring that there is timely flow of an organizationââ¬â¢s activities. Project managers are also required to make assessment of risks that could affect a project and try to manage the risks. In summary, project managers make up the backbone of any formal project management system and the performance of any project depends on the managers themselves (Burke, 1999). There are three distinct characteristics that define a formal management structure; formality, the presence of groupings and the implementation of various systems. There exist rules and regulations that govern the relationships of the members of the organization. These rules also guide the reporting mechanisms of the members and the responsibilities / power which each member holds. These rules and regulations form the basis of all relationships and activities within the organization. Formal organizations also group their members into teams and taskforces that are designed to suit various needs within the organization. For example accountants will usually be grouped together, designers with fellow designers and so forth. The groupings form departments and many departments form the organization. However formal management has been said to be a very rigid mechanism by which an organization / project should be kept in check. This is because failure on the part of the managers would result in the total collapse of the organization. This is because managers are expected to provide guidance, direction and ensure that all members perform their duties. Culture on the other hand is a better driver as it does not need to be enforced by anyone. Culture is self driven and once the members of an organization have adopted a desirable culture they will conduct themselves in accord to the culture without being supervised by a manager (Johnstone et al 2002). Culture is also a better means of ensuring that a project is completed as it allows people to go out of the set boundaries and make innovations. Culture driven projects are better as they allow for unified and independent thinking at the same time. Whereas a formal management structure relies on the manager to make decisions a culture driven project accepts all dec isions as long as they fall under the culture boundaries of the organization. Formal management structures are slow and time consuming. This is because all major decisions and control is dependent on the managers. This leads to a very slow decision making process as the managers have to receive reports from members, deliberate on the reports and then give their recommendations. In cases where the manager is slow or is not presence this hinders the further development of the project (Young, 2007). Many organizations that employ the formal type of management usually group their employees into departments. The departments are usually made up of people with common skills and areas of expertise. However such departmental setups hinder the exchange and sharing of ideas between people of different areas of expertise. Due to the formal setup members from different departments lack a common factor that would enhance cooperation between the departments. This leads to poor coordination between the departments. In culture driven organizations, the members are unified by the common culture and this enhances the cooperation levels of the employees. Culture driven projects are therefore much more organized and have a better flow of activities as compared to formal projects (Kloppenborg, 2009). Formal management of projects requires the mapping out and development of clear cut systems that will ensure the smooth flow of the project. These systems are essential in ensuring efficient execution of the project and its activities. Culture driven projects however do not need such a system so as to run smoothly. The culture itself forms a dynamic system through which all the activities are executed effectively. Strategic management is a major component of formal management systems. It involves the science and methodologies of formulating cross functional parameters that enable an organization to achieve its objectives. Strategic management involves the development of missions and vi sions, mapping out of objectives and the making of critical decisions for the company (Allan, 2004). Projects in formal management are stepping stones on which a firm uses to achieve its goals and objectives. The project development processes of a firm are driven by its strategic development goals and objectives. Examples of strategic elements include mission, objective, goals, programs and workable strategies. Formal management is however beneficial as it promotes proper and sober decision making as compared to culture based management. This is because decision making and planning activities in a formal management are usually done after careful consideration and assessment. Culture based management is however prone to errors and misguided actions due inadequate consideration and thinking. Conclusion From the study it is evident that culture is an important aspect of any organization. The Selling of Women in America Beautiful, skin-tight clothing, thin, blonde, long hair, and big breasted women are what people normally think of when they think of television commercials. This is very stereotypical but how stereotypical is it? Look at the media anymore and this is what the audience sees. There may be a change here and there with the hair color and how tight the clothing is but in all honestly this is what the public is seeing on television screens if they sit there and watch the television screens. Our society has brought about the sex appeal in women to sell their products. How true is all of this? From a series of surveys, an interview, observation, and case study I have chosen to prove that a certain ââ¬Å"typeâ⬠of woman is used in commercials and that she is used for her sex appeal in them. I surveyed five girls and five guys on whether or not they think that women are used as sex objects and if there is a certain type of women that is used for these commercials. An interview was also done with my friend Lindsay to go into more detail on this subject. Many different answers were given but there were specific types of answers that the majority of the ten interviewees answered with. In surveying these ten people that I have chosen I came up with some diverse answers and yet some similar ones. Sixty percent of the people surveyed reported that sports and sitcoms were the top two television programs watched. The main sports that are watched are football, basketball, hockey, and baseball, however, there were others mentioned. It was funny to see that the type of commercial that was mostly perceived by the surveyors was beer commercials, but other responses included sports, clothing, foo... ...tracted to her appearance referring to her a ââ¬Å"hotâ⬠and they wouldnââ¬â¢t change a thing to her outfit. However, one of them said that they would use 1-800-COLLECT because of disliking other telephone services but not because the angel said to. But he did feel that she does leave the number floating around in his head because she is the one saying it. Women are clearly used in commercials for their sex appeal and it is not just any woman; it is a woman who is most likely big breasted, slim, attractive with long, blonde hair, smiling, tall, curvy, and model-like. Because of this ââ¬Å"attractivenessâ⬠men and both women find themselves viewing commercials that have these types of women in them. From the surveys, interview, and case study I have found that these stereotypes are true and that yes, people may buy these products because of these beautiful, glamorous women.

Facts: Years ago members of major conferences in college football formed what was known as the College Football Association. The idea of this was to promote the interests of major football-playing schools within the NCAA structure. The University of Oklahoma was a respondent in this particular case. Issues: In 1979 the CFA member schools began to advocate that colleges with major football programs should have a greater voice in the formulation of football television policy than they had in the NCAA. CFA tried to negotiate a television agreement of its own, developed a plan, and was offered a contract by NBC. This would have allowed the member schools more television appearances, and would have increased the overall revenues realized by CFA members. As a result the NCAA publicly announced that any school participating in this agreement would be punished in all sports at that school. Holding: On September 8, 1981 respondents commenced this action in the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma and obtained a preliminary injunction preventing the NCAA from initiating disciplinary proceedings of otherwise interfering with the CFAââ¬â¢s efforts to perform its agreement with NBC. Notwithstanding the entry of the injunction, most CFA members were unwilling to commit themselves to the new contractual arrangement with the NBC in the face of the threatened sanctions and therefore the agreement was never finalized. The first deadly hate crime in the aftermath happened to a turbaned Sikh American, Balbir Singh Sodhi, who was killed outside his gas station in Mesa, Arizona on September 15, 2001. Mr. Sodhi was a kind hearted man and a devout Sikh who would distribute free candies and drinks to children who came to his gas station. And if people were not able to pay at the moment, he would often tell them it was okay to come back and pay tomorrow. He was even planning to donate blood to the victims of 9/11. The murder of this innocent and kind hearted man was the event that triggered the founding of the Sikh Coalition. Ever since, they have diligently worked to help victims and prevent hate crimes. Although they are the Sikh Coalition, their efforts are not just for the benefits of Sikhs. They work to create safer schools for every child, fight employment discrimination, prevent hate crimes and discrimination, fight legal battles for those who are unable to afford legal fees, empower the Sikh commu nity, and spread awareness about issues they handle in order to prevent them. Sikhism is the worldââ¬â¢s fifth-largest religion, followed by more than 25 million people worldwide. For centuries before the religion of Sikhism was established, the turban was common in many south Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. Sikhs believe in one God, and that all religions are equal. As long as one follows and worships God no matter what religion either Muslim, Sikh or Christian etc. that is good. We believe that peopleââ¬â¢s religions are just different methods of worshiping the same God, any method is permissible as long as one believes in a single Almighty God. When the Sikh faith was developing from the 15th through 18th centuries in South Asia, the turban was worn only by the higher classes and elites of society. The reasoning behind Sikhs wearing turbans is to signify the equality among all of our faithââ¬â¢s followers. In addition, in South Asian culture, it is a sign of respectfulness to keep your head covered which is another reason why Sikhs wear turbans. Turbans were also very practical for Indianââ¬â¢s because they provide a sort of protection for the wearerââ¬â¢s head as is it extremely hot in India. To further emphasize equality, all male Sikhs share the last name (or middle same) Singh which means lion, and all female Sikhs share the last name Kaur, which means princess. The leaders who compiled the Sikh holy text also believed in equality for men and women. Women were allowed to keep the Kaur name on marriage, and religious leaders did not allow followers to participate in female infanticide that was practiced in India and said women captured in battle were not to be kept as property. In the United States, there has been a growth in cultural events related to Sikhism. The states of New Jersey and Delaware have announced April as a Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month, and Canada has its Sikh Awareness Week at the end of March. These are the results of the efforts made by organizations such as the Sikh Coalition. I arranged an interview over the phone alongside two other AMS students with a representative of the Sikh Coalition, Inderpreet Kaur, to talk about the issues of racism and misidentification. In addition, we also discussed personal experiences and asked for her opinion on certain matters. Here are some questions and answers from the interview we conducted: Q: Have you ever been misidentified for the way you look? A: I have personally only been misidentified few times during my life here in America. I do know friends and family who have been misidentified numerous times. Q: Have you ever been stopped at a airport by the TSA? A: I was stopped one time on a flight from San Francisco to New York for a random check. Other than that I have not been stopped as much. Q: Have you ever been called a Muslim or terrorist? A: Numerous times. I have been called a muslim or a terrorist by passersby in their cars and such. Q: What does the Sikh Coalition do? A: The Sikh Coalition is committed to fighting hate crime and profiling. Our goal is to create a social climate in which Sikh Americans can live with dignity without being targeted for violence or discrimination. Q: What action do you take against hate crimes? A: The Sikh Coalitions direct legal work effectively combats bias-moti vated violence across the country. We have also consistently led efforts to strengthen data collection to track hate crimes and TSA profiling. When Sikh Americans are targeted because of their appearance, we will not allow policymakers or perpetrators to plead ignorance and evade accountability. Q: What are your feeling toward the hate crimes? A: All people deserve to live in a world without hate and discrimination no matter what race they are or what their religious beliefs are. Q: Do you believe TSA racial profiling exists? A: In the years after 9/11, Sikh Americans were subjected to profiling on the basis of their actual or perceived race, religion, ethnicity and national origin. The problem was particularly acute for Sikh travelers, who experienced discriminatory TSA screening at American airports. Profiling not only stigmatizes its victims but also makes our nation less safe because it redirects law enforcement resources away from detecting and preventing actual criminal behavior. Sadly, there is currently little that victims can do to hold the government accountable for profiling. Q: What is the solution to ending TSA racial profiling? A: The Sikh Coalition continues to support passage of the End Racial Profiling Act (ERPA). This model legislation would prohibit invidious profiling throughout the United States. In the interim, we are using technology to hold TSA accountable. Our free Fly Rights mobile phone app allows travelers to file official complain ts of mistreatment and discrimination against TSA from the convenience of their iPhones and Androids. These official complaints are transmitted directly to TSA and help policymakers address problems before they spiral out of control. Islamophobia and anti-Sikh sentiment are prominent throughout the United States, which has manifested itself in a number of cases of discrimination on public transportation and elsewhere. In a particular case, Sikh activist Simranjeet Singh posted a series of Snapchat photos taken by a person on a plane, captioned to make it appear as though a Sikh man wearing a turban was a terrorist planning to take down the plane. In another case, a focus group consisting of random people were surveyed about their experiences with harassment. The researchers found that two specific incidents were were the most common among religious minorities: being followed by a security guard or salesperson in a store, or being purposefully pushed or shoved on a subway platform. Approximately 23 percent of both Sikhs and Muslim people reported being followed by store staff members in stores. Sixteen percent of the surveyââ¬â¢s Muslim participants said theyââ¬â¢d been intentionally shoved on a subway platform. And 27 percent of Muslim Arab women wearing a hijab reported being intentionally pushed because of their religious beliefs and appearance. Over the course of this project, I visited the San Jose Temple a few times, where the Sikh Coalition aims to spread awareness about itself as an organization that Sikhs can turn to if they are in need of help. I went there and spoke with other volunteers there as we informed people about the Sikh Coalition and what they do and helped fundraise for the Coalition. In addition we served food and cleaned the temple. We also went out and picked up trash in Eastside San Jose where the temple is located. The volunteers of the Sikh Coalition are proud of the community they live in and do what they can to better it. Racial or religious discrimination and harassment is hateful and uncalled for. Even the lightest terrorist joke can offend a large group of people. It is time we stopped grouping and profiling people of different religious and race backgrounds. Discrimination and harassment should not be a part of the American culture. America is a melting pot and our country was founded on the p rinciple of equality and welcoming people of all backgrounds with open arms.
